A Night to Remember: Life Changing, By Design Gala Raises $175,000 to Transform Camp Shawnigan
VICTORIA, B.C. — It was an unforgettable evening of inspiration, community, and impact at this year’s Life Changing, By Design Gala, held June 6 in the stunning Terrace Ballroom at the Inn at Laurel Point. This moving event brought together local business leaders, media, and dedicated allies in support of Easter Seals Camp Shawnigan.
By night’s end, guests had raised an incredible $175,000 to fund the revitalization of Camp Shawnigan.
The evening opened with a warm welcome from Paul Haysom, who served as emcee, followed by opening remarks from Lisa Beck, CEO of Easter Seals BC/Yukon. Lisa set the tone for the evening with a message about the importance of building spaces that are truly inclusive for all.
During dinner, the audience was captivated by Michael Sacks, who shared his passion for the impact of accessibility on individual lives and the broader community. Finally, Karin Pasqua took the stage — introduced by her husband, Marco — to share her family’s personal journey navigating life as a family living with a physical disability. Her honest and heartfelt story served as a moving reminder of why spaces like Camp Shawnigan matter.
The energy in the room soared during the live auction, which featured a golf day with a pro, a fishing trip with Stew Young, and a chance to skate with a Vancouver Canuck. But it was the Fund-a-Need portion of the evening that truly showcased the generosity in the room, as guests raised their paddles high in support of a new inclusive, restored camp.
Throughout the night, guests enjoyed a mouthwatering meal and lively entertainment from jazz band, Lust Life Trio, creating an atmosphere infectious with celebration and purpose.
The heart of the evening — and the reason behind it all — was the reinvigoration of Camp Shawnigan. More than just a summer retreat, the camp offers children and adults with disabilities the chance to connect, explore, and grow in a fully inclusive environment. With a vision rooted in Universal Design, the camp will include modern, accessible facilities that empower campers to participate fully and independently.
This initiative goes far beyond canoe rides and campfire stories. It’s about giving people the confidence, independence, and connection they deserve — and ensuring no one is left on the sidelines.
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, donors, and guests, the $175,000 raised will bring that vision closer to reality.
To everyone who gave, attended, or supported this year’s gala: thank you. You are helping create a future where everyone belongs — and where access to joy, growth, and community is no longer a privilege, but a promise.
