Embracing the Sticky Brain: How Camp Empowered Isabelle to Thrive

For Isabelle, Easter Seals Camp Winfield isn’t just a summer getaway—it’s a place where she’s discovered independence, built lasting friendships, and gained the confidence to face life’s challenges. Isabelle, who lives in Kelowna with her mom, dad, and dog Ozzy, first attended camp when she was around eight years old. She remembers feeling a mix of excitement and nerves as she prepared to try new activities like the rock-climbing wall and the big swing. But from the moment she arrived, she was welcomed into a supportive and encouraging environment where trying something new felt a little easier.

Now 20 years old, Isabelle looks forward to camp all year long. It’s not just about the fun activities—though she loves swimming, the waterslide, and the legendary camp dance parties – it’s about the connections she’s made with the people she has met. “I really like the camp counsellors,” Isabelle says. “They’re so funny and nice.” Meeting new people and building friendships at camp has given Isabelle the confidence to step outside her comfort zone and feel more comfortable in social settings.

Outside of camp, Isabelle has a full and busy life. She works part-time at Bosley’s Pet Store, volunteers at Sunshine Farms, and competes in several Special Olympics sports, including basketball, bowling, softball, and snowshoeing. She’s also attending college part-time, focusing on math, her favorite subject. Isabelle’s mom, Cheryl, credits camp with helping Isabelle become more independent. “Camp was one of the first places where we trusted Isabelle to be on her own,” Cheryl explains. “It gave her the confidence to navigate things like taking the bus and attending college by herself.”

For Cheryl and her husband, finding a place where Isabelle could stay overnight and be surrounded by people who understand and embrace her has been life-changing. “Easter Seals is the only place where we’ve felt comfortable leaving Isabelle overnight,” Cheryl says. “The staff are well-trained, enthusiastic, dynamic, and patient. They don’t just tolerate differences—they embrace them.” Cheryl describes how the camp staff’s understanding and flexibility made a significant difference, especially when Isabelle faced challenges adjusting to changes.

Isabelle’s “sticky brain,” as Cheryl calls it, is a common characteristic of Prader-Willi Syndrome that makes it hard for her to shift gears when things don’t go as planned. Changes in routine or unexpected events can be overwhelming, making it difficult for Isabelle to adapt or let go of a particular thought or activity. But at Easter Seals camp, the staff took the time to understand how Isabelle’s mind works and found ways to support her.

The counselors used proactive strategies—like giving her advance notice of schedule changes and creating comforting routines—to help Isabelle feel prepared and secure. More importantly, they embraced her exactly as she is. “The counselors are young, dynamic, and so accepting,” Cheryl says. “They make sure Isabelle feels seen and valued.” At camp, Isabelle doesn’t have to change to fit in; she’s supported for who she is, sticky brain and all.

The impact of camp extends beyond the summer. Isabelle has formed strong and lasting bonds with her fellow campers, many of whom she sees regularly at the movies, bowling, and Special Olympics events. The confidence she’s gained at camp has helped her in everyday life—whether it’s making friends at school, managing her schedule, or participating in new activities. Cheryl notes that Isabelle now takes charge of tracking camp registration dates, reminding her parents exactly when it opens so she can secure her spot. “She talks about camp all year,” Cheryl says. “It’s the highlight of her year and such a huge part of

who she is.”
